A great way to get your site noticed by search engines and visitors alike, is to have lots of links on other sites that point to yours. It gives your site credence and legitimacy. Links prove that your site is important, and they are digital proof to the search engines that you should be highly ranked. Here are a few tips on how to get links pointing to your site:

Add a link to your signature

Adding a link to your digital signature is an effective way to get your name out there. If you ask a question or give an answer in a chat or forum, you should always sign your name “John (or Jane) Smith from www.mysite.com”, that way, whenever your name is on the web, your site is too. This method is subtle, non-pushy, and effective.

Link Out

A great way to receive links is to give them. Link out to a similar non-competitive site and let them know about it. Write them a short e-mail letting them know a little about your business, the link, and of course when you sign the e-mail leave your URL. They may or may not give you a link back, but they will definitely click on your site, and you will get your name out there and improve your credibility.

Ask

Sometimes simply asking for a link will work wonders. Send out e-mail to about ten sites that are similar to your niche, and tell them about your business. Ask them for a link and what you can do for them in response. Maybe you can write an article about their site on your site, or some other marketing favor.

Join Google Groups

A terrific way to network is through Google Groups. Find a Google Group that supports your website’s focus and join it. If your business is hosting an event you can mention it to your group. If you have a simple question, you can mention it to your group. Got a unique idea? Mention it to your group. Always leave your digital signature when posting.

Yahoo Answers

Yahoo Answers can become quite addicting when you get into it, but it is an extremely effective way to create links. They won’t however, be seen by search engines, but they will be seen by thousands of people. Start answering questions about your website’s focus and add your site as a source at the bottom of your signature. Yahoo answers are seen by tons of people over and over. Especially if it is viewed by the asker as a “favorite”.

Link Building doesn’t have to be hard. If you only try a few times a week to get your links out there, it will really start showing in your Search Engine rankings. A few links will turn into hundreds of links in no time. So, like any good businessperson, keep at it and your efforts will be rewarded.
