Building an Affiliate Website in Simple Steps

Building an Affiliate Website in Simple Steps
By Chris Gilmour

You will always hear rumours about affiliate marketing such as running an online business is a scam, or it is easy, maybe that you will make a fortune immediately. These are misconceptions as my guess is, is that maybe not even 5-10% of people who run an affiliate business have become wealthy in an instant. Sure, there will be some who take to it like a duck to water and for some reason it just works perfectly. However, for the rest of us, this just isn’t true, but we all believer that to become a successful affiliate will take time and it will happen – eventually.

To start as an affiliate it is important that you consider starting and running your own website. It has to be professionally administered and well thought out and there are some rules that you probably need to consider.

Firstly, you are going to need to determine a theme or where and what you are going to market to the online community. It is a lot easier to design your website when you know what it is you are going to market.

Next comes your domain name. This is the unique name that starts www. and for many it is best to consider a name that represent the product or service that you are marketing. It will also help with your SEO work if the domain name is a well searched for term as your website name is one of the ‘factors’ that search engines consider when performing the search engine ranking. It has also been said that search engines consider domains ending in .com as more important that other endings, although this hasn’t been proven correct. Yet, having a .com name is the most common and what most people will consider when choosing a domain name.

Once you have your domain name, you need to choose who is going to host your website. Most people have the same company host their website as being the same one they have registered their domain name with. However, this might not be the best option as you need to consider security of the web hosing servers , the up time, the cost, how many webpages (subdomains) you can host etc

Now for your webpages. For many, including myself, not to worry if you are not experienced in web design language. There are plenty of web designing software programs around – to buy or even free – or you can get someone to do it for you..

The thing to remember is that when you are designing your website you need to draw and keep your visitors. To help get your visitors you will need to provide good content and do lots of “off page” methods to help rank your site (SEO). All will help rank your webpages well, which will result in more exposure which means more potential sales.

One of the common tricks is to make your site simple and easy to read and professional looking. It has to be pleasing on the eye and appear more interesting and relevant than others in the same category or niche that you are targeting.

Eventually, once you have your site, you will continue to learn, develop and test new ideas and strategies. You will learn (if not already) about using keywords effectively, SEO techniques, content and traffic generation, etc, etc. The importance of updating your website regularly and adding new pages and content will be one of the keys to your success. In fact you will quickly learn that this is just the beginning of what is required to administer and run a successful affiliate marketing website.
