Home Business Tips – Plug and Play, My Foot!
By Steven Wagenheim
I’ve been running my own home business for almost seven years now. In that time, I have seen it all. But I have to tell you, I am sick and tired of the BS that I see filling my email box on a daily basis. The latest one is the reason for this article/rant, or whatever you want to call it. If you can’t handle some cold, hard truth, you probably don’t want to read what’s coming next.
Today, I got an email with the following subject, “You Plug And Play Money Making System.” Inside the email it talks about how you can make $1,000 a week without a website, product of your own or anything for that matter. Just plug it in and watch the money come pouring from the sky. Reminds me of when I first started buying lottery tickets back in the 70s because I thought I was going to hit the pick 6 and win millions of dollars. I’m still waiting.
Okay, let me set the record on this plug and play, do nothing stuff. It’s a lot of hog wash. It’s nothing but hype and doesn’t work. There is nothing, and I mean nothing online where you can just sit back and watch the money fall from the skies. If you believe that there is, I have some land to sell you dirt cheap. I’ll even throw in a lawn mower so you can cut the grass. The truth is, earning a living online takes work…lots of it.
For starters, you better have a product…and a darn good one. People don’t buy pet rocks anymore. If you want to make significant sales, you have to have something that people want. And these days, with the miserable economy, it better be something that they want desperately. Folks who are drowning in credit card debt are prime candidates for a product that will get them out of debt, especially one that REALLY works. Forget about selling your little ebook on how to grow radishes. In the grand scheme of things, nobody cares.
After you have that product, you better have a darn professional site to send them to. People are sick and tired of those crappy looking sites that look like somebody out of grade school designed them. You need something that looks good. Go to a site like WebMD. THAT’S professional.
But it doesn’t end there. Just because you have a fancy looking site online doesn’t mean people are going to flock to it. There are millions of sites out there for each niche. Your site is just one out of those millions. If you want people to make it to your site, you have to get them there. There are only two ways to do this. You either pay for the traffic through something like Adwords or even media buys, or you generate it the slow way through search engine optimization and content, such as writing and distributing articles. The first way is fast but expensive. The second way is cheap, but slow as molasses. Choose your poison.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. You better have a great product delivery system and excellent customer support. What, you think people are just going to buy your product and you’ll never hear from them again? People will have questions…lots of questions. I get customer support emails daily. And when you do get them, you better reply in a timely fashion. People don’t like to be kept waiting.
There’s more…lots more. But I don’t want to turn this article into a novel. Point is, plug and play is a myth. If you think you’re going to start and run a home business that requires NO work, do yourself a favor.
Go get a job at a McDonalds.
I hear you can get free food if you’re an employee.
To YOUR Success,
