So you are a mom who wants to launch a home based business. A noble and well meaning intent, no doubt about it. Particularly because of internet access, it would seem that this would be a marriage made in heaven. And what better situation for a work from home mom, than to be able to have a profitable business that you can run from home while raising your family. The only problem is that work at home schemes and internet “business opportunities” are so prevalent and so many are questionable at best, the problem becomes evident right away. How does one make the correct decision in determining in which business to embrace and become involved?

The first thing one must do is establish the credibility of the company or enterprise with whom one wishes to become involved. Check with local authorities such as the Better Business Bureau, Chambers of Commerce and local business people in the town or state where the business is located. How long has the enterprise been in business? With what organizations and associations within the particular field are they members? One easy test is to call them right away on the phone. Do they have a real person you can speak with that actually can give you meaningful information, or can they direct you to someone who can. Beware of a no-response response, or even worse a situation where no one can be contacted at all. If you are unable to contact anyone, or there is no phone number accessible, forget it!

Do your research and due diligence carefully, for it can save you quite a bit of trouble and heartache later. As a busy mom, you don’t have a whole lot of time to waste. After all, if you are going to spend your time and perhaps hard earned money on a business venture with someone, you want to find out early if you can work with them. Find out if there is a plan for you to advertise and market their product or service. What has been the success pattern of this strategy? Are there people who are successful using this method with whom you can speak?

The next step is probably the most critical. Once you have determined that you have an organization that is legitimate, you must have a product or service that people want to buy. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if no one wants to buy it, you are dead in the water. You really need to spend a good deal of your time early on in researching this item, for this can make or break your effort. Once established at this step, a product that is in demand by most people will make the rest of your efforts that of simply organizing and implementing a step by step marketing program.

Next you must determine the time and financial resources that you have available to devote to your new enterprise. Ideally, you will want to have a program where you can start out at your own pace, both from a time standpoint and financially. If you can begin for under fifty dollars and start the program in your spare time, that would be great. Once you learn more about what you are doing, and become more familiar with the product, you can expand at your own pace.
