SEO Is a Must For Budding Webmasters
By Clade Johnson
SEO (pronounced as see-oh) is the acronym given to ‘search engine optimization’ and is an important weapon in the hands of both established and budding webmasters. A few decades back one just had to put the word ‘sex’ countless times on the index page (the term ‘landing page’ had not yet been coined) of their website to get the same ranked higher in the search engines. In fact, most websites… even those that did not have anything to do with sex, had their index page chock full with this word. Eventually this resulted in the webmasters of the search engines receiving complaints of misuse of keywords.
People searched for the term ‘sex’ and were often provided with results that led them to holy places. This was something outlandish and had to be curbed. It was keeping this trend in mind that the webmasters of search engines developed a new algorithm to determine the page rankings of search engines. According to the new rules, if a website’s landing page contained more than 7 instances of the key word, it would be considered as spam and the website would be banned from being indexed by the search engine.
With changes in search engine algorithms newer technologies were put into place to determine how the rankings of a site were determined. It was during this phase that LSI (latent semantic indexing) was introduced. After this rule was implemented the value of a page would not just be determined by the main keyword but also by peripheral keywords that had something in common with the main keyword. The more latent keywords in the index page, the higher the page ranking of a website.
If the main keyword of a site was ‘boots’ then suitable latent keywords/ key phrases could well be ‘leather,’ ‘boots,’ ‘polish,’ ‘sandals,’ ‘shoes.’ etc. Obviously there are certain other factors too that determine the relevance of a web page and this includes the number of backlinks that point towards a website from other websites of a similar nature. If you too are a budding webmaster and are interested to provide the index page of your website with proper SEO you have several options available. You can either go in for specialized software that helps to extract relevant terms and phrases for your website or you can enlist the help of any organization or individual that specializes in search engine optimization techniques.
This is not an easy task and being over dependent on software only to generate LSI friendly keywords and phrases might spell doom. You need to study the mindset of people who are searching the internet for products you are planning to market and see what they are using as search terms. If they were searching for ‘rubber gum footwear’ they would not be directed to your site since none of these three terms were there in your index page. Optimizing your website for search engines might initially appear to be an easy task. However as you keep forging ahead, you will find that you have to fine tune the index page of your website again and again with newer keywords/ key phrases to stay ahead of the competition.
