Writing Solid SEO Content – Incorporating Keywords and Avoiding Spam in SEO Content

Call it what you want – internet copy writing, web content writing, or SEO copy writing – but writing this content isn’t the equivalent of data entry. When you write poorly written content, search engines like Google can tell and won’t rank a website well. In many cases, spam is now a bad practice SEO practice and, at the same time, content shouldn’t spammed with keywords. This past year at SEO conference SES Toronto new techniques were discussed, from the obvious like social media marketing with tools like Twitter to writing better copy, as the future of SEO writing includes putting well-written content up on a website to optimize its potential on the search engines. Although poorly-written content can be avoided by hiring a professional English language writer, as opposed to a programmer or outsourcing to a writer whose first language isn’t English, SEO writing, even for the professional, involves keyword research and proper placement of terms so that the content doesn’t sound too repetitive.

In most college-level English classes, students learn about advanced grammar and that most words shouldn’t be repeated more than twice in the same paragraph; metaphors, in addition, are limited to only two per double-spaced page. While SEO seems to break some of these writing techniques, writing well can camouflage this aspect.

But, before a writer goes to create SEO content, the first thing that needs to be done is keyword research. What words will optimize a website and, from these words, which phrases can be used? For the latter, the tool Trellian Keyword Discovery can assist with finding phrases to help keywords blend in easier. Finding the best keywords, ultimately, involves brainstorming all words associated with a website and seeing how, through keyword tools, these words can help with optimization.

After keyword research, however, the next steps in creating SEO content are those involved with all types of writing: writing with proper grammar and researching. Well-written content isn’t only grammatically correct but also intelligent. When a piece of SEO content begins “These products are wonderful, efficient, and terrific,” the reader will inevitably be in for a few minutes of reading vapid prose. As with all writing, news or promotional, using hyperbole isn’t effective and descriptions – with the keywords incorporated, in this case – make for more effective content. Ask yourself, “What are the benefits of this product?” and “What aspects are unique about it?” Once you research the topic and find more descriptive adjectives, the prose will have more depth.

The combination of these two aspects, keyword research and effective prose, are the future of content writing. As Google is able to pick up on spam-like content, having a content writer craft unique content for a website is one of the keys to optimization. In addition, even with well-written content, no to pieces of prose should be written identically as, even in this case, Google is able to pick up on two websites, or two web pages, that have identical sentences or paragraphs.
